China cups and soot
4 1/2"x 72"x 4"
2009

I made candles from cotton wool and vegetable oil. When lit this mixture gives off a thick black smoke which I used to coat the insides of the white China cups. This covers the cups in a velvety looking soot. The cups are then displayed in a way that dishes are generally displayed in a kitchen setting. The title "inheritance" not only speaks to the objects and household items handed down from family members but to the dark traits inherited through the gene pool such as alcoholism, depression and mental illness. Because the soot material is fugitive each time the installation is shown the insides of the cups need to be remade with fresh soot.
